The molten iron is drained into a torpedo car and transported to Weirton Steel's basic oxygen plant (BOP). A mixture of pure molten iron and scrap metals is heated and reacts with oxygen in the BOP to produce liquid steel. Weirton Steel, which has two basic oxygen furnaces, produces an average of over 8,000 tons of liquid steel each day.

Liquid steel from the BOP is poured through a continuous caster. The caster molds the molten steel into solid slabs that are between 32 and 49 inches wide. Slabs are cut to length depending on customer specifications.
