What is Commercial Quality (CQ)? - ASTM 569
This product can incur simple bending or moderate drawing. It can be bent flat on itself
in any direction at room temperature. The product normally has a 0.15% max. carbon
content. It may be necessary to roller level this product just before fabrication to
prevent fluting.
What is Drawing Quality (DQ)? - ASTM 621
Compared to CQ, this product has a greater degree of ductility and is more consistent in
performance. The product normally has a 0.10% max. carbon content. It may be necessary to
roller level this product just before fabrication to prevent fluting.
What is Drawing Quality - Special Killed Steel (DQSK)? - ASTM 622
Compared to DQ, this product has more stringent drawing requirements and is normally
suitable for deep drawing applications.
What is Structural Quality (SQ) - ASTM 570?
This product is furnished when certain strength levels or mechanical properties are
required. Usually these applications involve roll forming or brake press bending.
Mechanical properties such as yield and tensile strength, and elongation in 2" can be
reported and test reports can be issued, if requested.
What thickness tolerances will Weirton Steel guarantee?
For Hot Roll Carbon Steel Sheet, Weirton will guarantee 3/4 of the commercial (AISI)
tolerance. Dimensional tolerances for greater than .25% Carbon and High Strength Low Allow
sheets will be produced to meet AISI tolerances. Orders calling for 1/2 gauge tolerance
must be reviewed before acceptance. Thickness measurements are taken 1" from the
edge.
What width, flatness, and camber tolerances can be expected?
Weirton's product will meet AISI tolerances.
Can I order light gauge hot rolled and expect to substitute this for DQ and CQ cold
rolled?
An emphatic NO! The mechanical properties of Hot Roll are not nearly as good as the
mechanical properties of Cold Roll, and there is much more variability in the properties
of Hot Roll when compared to Cold Roll.
If each product were rated best to worst, regarding suitability for drawing and variance
of properties, they should be rated as follows. (SAE 1006-1008).

Should I order "Temper Passed"?
Temper Passed should be ordered when the customer considers the surface and flatness to be
critical and coil breaks objectionable. The temper pass will not make the surface as good
as Cold Roll, nor will it guarantee against coil breaks, but it will help surface and
shape and, if used in a timely manner after temper passing, may help to reduce coil
breaks.
What if I want to paint Hot Roll?
Order should be entered with "surface critical," and end use should be
specified.
What surface can be expected?
Hot-rolled coils will contain some surface imperfections.
Can inside and outside laps be put on claim?
No.
Can Weirton supply Rockwell Hardness of "B" 65 max.?
Weirton can supply to Rockwell "B" 65 maximum if boron is added to the
steel. Boron is used on all DQSK and DQ unless the customer orders C-1010 or specifically
states "no boron." Weirton will add boron to CQ if the customer requests
"aim Rockwell 'B' 60 max."
