WEIRTON, W.VA. – Weirton Steel Corp. today reported it has requested that a federal bankruptcy judge grant the company three additional months to finalize its plan of reorganization. The company filed the request on Sept. 5 with a federal bankruptcy court in Wheeling, W.Va. The original reorganization date has been set for Sept. 16, but the company has asked the date be moved to Dec. 15. "An extension request is very common, especially with large, complex corporations. In our situation, the retirees’ committee, which only recently was appointed to negotiate benefits with the company, has yet to secure an attorney. Additional time is needed in order to have the negotiation proceed properly," said Gregg Warren, company spokesman. A hearing on the company’s request will be held Sept. 23. Weirton Steel, the fifth largest U.S. integrated steel company, filed for bankruptcy protection on May 19.
