For Immediate Release
August 29, 2002

WEIRTON, W.VA. – The victims and heroes of 9-11 will be honored by Weirton Steel Corp., the Independent Steelworkers Union (ISU) and the Independent Guard Union (IGU).

Next week, the company and unions will place 200 "Lest We Forget, 9-11" banners and posters throughout Weirton Steel. During the morning of Sept. 11, U.S. flags company-wide and at the ISU Hall will fly at half-mast and at noon be raised to the top of the mast.

"The people of Weirton and the Ohio Valley have been recognized for the spirit that makes this country great. You can see the spirit of America in our faces and hear the strength of America in our voices," said ISU President Mark Glyptis.

"I know the people of Weirton Steel and the community will send a message of solidarity to the families of the victims and heroes of Sept. 11."

Glyptis, Weirton Steel President and Chief Executive Officer John Walker and IGU President Joe Balzano are encouraging area residents to attend a noon memorial service on Sept. 11 at the Honor Roll monument at the company's General Office on Three Springs Drive.

The City of Weirton and the American Legion are organizing the memorial service. Walker and Glyptis will participate and Weirton Steel's security, fire and emergency medical services personnel will attend.

In addition, Walker will provide 9-11 commemorative lapel stickers to the company's 3,600 employees to wear on Sept. 11 in honor the victims and heroes.

"Memorials can be found in many places, but principally in our hearts. We must always remember the impact of Sept. 11 on our lives and never take for granted the freedoms we share in our great democracy. To maintain those freedoms, we must face today's challenges with great faith, determination and courage," Walker commented.

Weirton Steel is the seventh largest U.S. integrated steel company.
