Weirton Steel’s Chief Executive Officer To Meet With Senior White House Advisor

For Immediate Release
May 1, 2003

WEIRTON, W.VA. – Weirton Steel Corp. President and Chief Executive Officer John H. Walker will meet Monday in Washington, D.C., with Karl Rove, senior advisor to President Bush.

The meeting will center on issues affecting the domestic steel industry and Weirton Steel. The issues include: surges in steel imports from developing nations currently exempt from the president’s tariff program; the need to continue the steel tariffs through March 2005 as originally planned; legacy costs; rising health care costs; and other matters designed to help the domestic steel industry to improve its competitiveness

The meeting comes less than a month after Walker met with U.S. Commerce Secretary Donald L. Evans to discuss similar issues. The two have met on several occasions in recent years.

"The administration has kept an open ear and open mind to our concerns and suggestions. I appreciate the opportunity to again discuss matters that are so very important to Weirton Steel and our industry," Walker said.

Weirton Steel is the seventh largest domestic steel company and produces hot-rolled, cold-rolled, galvanized and tinplated steel products. The company employs 3,524 and is the second largest U.S. producer of tin mill products.
