Weirton Steel Corp. is a major integrated steel producer located in Weirton, W.Va., 35 miles west of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Weirton Steel has a 22 percent share of the tin mill product market, which largely serves the food container industry. The company has a smaller share of the sheet product market focusing on service centers, converters and construction sectors.

Weirton's strategy has emphasized value-added steel products over commodity-type hot-rolled product. These include very light gauge steel products that find their way into housings for electric motors, oil filters and a variety of uses in the building and construction markets.

Weirton Steel Corporation was formed in 1982, when the company acquired the assets of the former Weirton Steel Division of National Steel Corporation. The acquisition was financed under an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. Weirton Steel made its first public stock offering in 1989. Currently, 21 percent of Weirton’s stock is held by its employees.
