About Us

"I will not stand by and allow the United
States to be a dumping ground for struggling economies. I will not stand by and allow US
workers, communities and companies to bear the brunt of other nations problematic
policies and practices....We are not the worlds dumpster."
--William M. Daley, U.S. Secretary of Commerce
The steel industry is not taking the situation lying down:
- On September 30th, Weirton Steel, along with eleven other domestic steel producers and
two trade unions, filed cases
with the U.S. International Trade Commission and the US Commerce Department against the
worst offenders of existing anti-dumping agreements. So far, the ITC has agreed that
Brazil, Japan and Russia are pursuing trade that is damaging to the US steel industry.
This opens the door to a broader based investigation by the Commerce Department to allow
for tariffs to be collected from these nations retroactive to the filing date. Commerce
has until Feb. 12th, 1999 to make their final decision.
- The US steel industry, the Independent Steelworkers Union and the Steelworkers of
America have joined hands in a public awareness campaign, Stand Up For Steel, to alert the
public and legislators about the damaging effects of illegal foreign imports on the steel
economy. Since the campaign launched in September of 1998, various steel communities
including Weirton, WV have hosted "Stand Up for Steel" rallies to galvanize
support for jobs and workers.
- Richard Riederer, President and CEO of Weirton Steel, along with many of his
counterparts at other steel producers, has met with President Clinton and members of his
cabinet, as well as a delegation of Congressional officials to alert them to the need for
timely action in response to the crisis.

Committee hearing on January 27, 1999: "U.S.
Trade Policy in the Era of Globalization Part II"
